The key people in any church are those who are there on mission. At Urban Hope these people are called "Shepherds." They are at Urban Hope for the purpose of sharing Christ with the community.
Each Shepherd has individuals with whom they make weekly contact, follow up spiritually, and pray for any special needs.
The shepherds at Urban Hope fall under two designations: Relocators and Remainers.
Remainers are people from Philadelphia who have become believers and are active in the ministry. They are remaining in the area to make a difference in the urban community. Relocators have moved into Philadelphia from other areas of the country in order to be part of the ministry at Urban Hope. They get jobs in order to support themselves in the ministry and many buy homes.
Urban Hope is privileged to have people live there who are willing to be on mission. When believers leave a neighborhood, many times that neighborhood falls away from God and begins to become sinful and immoral, focusing on selfish things such as money, drugs, and crime. That's why it's so important that believers not only move into a neighborhood, but make a difference by reaching out to their friends and neighbors, representing Jesus in a positive way.

Working with visiting teams
Ryan and Bethany Harvey have bought a home in the neighborhood, using it as a place of ministry. They are foster parents and have a son named Judah. Ryan works full-time and works with the youth program while Bethany works with the children's program. Outreach has been a real plus for Bethany since a number of people have come to the Lord through her influence. Ryan is from the Simi Valley Grace Brethren Church and is a product of their Christian School. He attended Grace College and majored in youth ministries (The National Institute) and served as the junior high coordinator at the Winona Lake (Ind.) Grace Brethren Church.
James Holt is from Waldorf, Md., and is a graduate of Philadelphia Biblical University. He is a very gifted teacher and musician. James teaches in the urban school systems and is respected as a social studies teacher. At Urban Hope he plays the guitar and is the music coordinator. James is also active in the youth ministry, leads a house church, and disciples a number of young men. He is the son of Bill and Marcia Holt and brother of Jason.
Ashli Moon is the coordinator of the children's ministries at Urban Hope. Ashli is originally from Lancaster, Pa., and graduated from Grace College with a major in art. Her artwork is seen in many aspects of the ministries of Urban Hope. Ashli works as a nanny. Her ministry at Urban Hope is overseeing Kingdom Kids and Cornerstone. Ashli is also learning Spanish to be more effective in ministry. She is presently living in the home of Carmen, where Spanish is the primary language. Carmen has three children, is a single parent mom, and was led to the Lord by Ashli.
Dave and Kelly Ritter are the newest members of the relocators staff. Dave is a student at Jefferson University studying to become a medical doctor and a PhD candidate. He currently works in research. Kelly is working with the children's ministries at Urban Hope and is involved in Cornerstone and many administrative areas. Both are graduates of Grace College. At Urban Hope they help lead a house-church. Kelly is the sister of Christy Holt and is from New Holland, Pa.
Jason Holt has been the director of the church ministry at Urban Hope for almost 10 years. He and Christy have purchased a home in the area and have three small children. Jason is from the Grace Brethren Church in Waldorf, Md. He graduated from The National Institute program at Grace College with a background in youth ministry and from Bakke Graduate University with a Masters in Global Urban Ministry. Jason serves as a house-church leader, administrator, and helps to train community leaders for the church.
Christy Holt is the wife of Jason Holt, the director of the church ministries at Urban Hope. Christy is a graduate of Grace College with a major in social work. She and Jason are active in hospitality, house-church ministry, children's ministry, and more. They have two young sons, Sam and Micah. Christy was originally from Penn Valley Grace Brethren Church in Telford, Pa. Jason and Christy own a home less than two blocks from the ministry.
