Pancakes Help Raise Money for Momentum

Students at the Grace Brethren Church in Alexandria, Va., are so excited about coming to Momentum that they served pancakes to the church to help raise money for registration.

The group prepared everything themselves including the menu, decorations, fresh fruit, and homemade pancakes. The brunch brought in many more people than they expected. The students dealt with real world issues of managing a kitchen, complete with hungry patrons desiring quick service, maintaining the focus to fill orders accurately, and shortage of food and seating to name just a few. "They overcame these obstacles with perseverance, finesse and calm!" said Stacey Moore from the Alexandria church. "God truly blessed their hard work with the most generous donations they have ever received!"

There's still time to register for Momentum Youth Conference. Visit buildmomentum.org for all the details.

Bible Quiz Material Announced for 2012-2013

Quizzing at Momentum Youth Conference

CE National is happy to announce that our Bible Quizzing cycle is coming in line with that of the World Bible Quiz Association (WBQA). Because of this change, we will be quizzing on the book of Matthew in 2012-2013. The version will continue to be the NIV 1984 edition.

This decision allows our quiz teams the option to locate, and quiz against, WBQA teams. Though the rules for quizzing with WBQA are somewhat different, the material is the same.

All materials for study and practices can be purchased from wbqa.org. Those materials include scripture portions, study question booklets, and other materials.

Because we will continue with our current rule book, some of the questions in the question booklet will not apply to our style of quizzing. You will receive more information from National Bible Quiz Director, Doug Courter, at Momentum 2012. You may contact Doug at pastordoug@fgbc.org with questions.

At Momentum we hope to have a representative from World Bible Quiz Association speak to coaches and quizzers in attendance about the differences in our quizzing style and World Bible Quiz Association's style. That session will be recorded and made available on the CE National website after the week of Momentum.

CE National continues to thank God for the ministry of Bible Quizzing which encourages young people to study and quiz over the contents of the Bible. How worthy is that?! If you want more information about Bible Quizzing, visit cenational.org/nac. For students who are not involved in Bible memory, CE National has Scripture Memorization Brochures that give verses ideal for committing to memory.

What's the Story Behind the Operation Barnabas Team Names?

Each year, Operation Barnabas administrative leaders select a name for their summer ministry tour. Usually, these have been descriptive of the location of the ministry: MidWest, So Cal, NorthWest, Blue Ridge Parkway, Peninsula… This year, with each tour traveling to both Ohio and Indiana for the majority of the tours, a change was in order.

Taking a cue from the naming/numbering of the OB buses (bus #1123 and #1124 are from the OB theme verses of Acts 11:23-24, to give an example) leaders selected a numeric name for their tour that matched a specific verse of scripture.

Sarah Knepper, administrative leader for Team 320, says her team name comes from Ephesians 3:20 which says, "Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us." "We plan to orient our team around the truth found in these verses," says Sarah.

Alex McCue, administrative leader for Team 611, says his team name is a reference to (and in context of) 1 Cor. 6:9-11. Alex chose this verse because of the way in which it speaks about the beauty of the finished work of Christ in the gospel. "…but you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God."

"The gospel should always be the substance, motivation, and source of all ministry training," says Alex.

TNI Graduates Honored

TK gives the TNI satchel gift to the graduates

Each year, The National Institute hosts a dinner at CE National's Russell Center in honor of its graduates. This year, with students receiving their diplomas on Saturday at the Grace College commencement ceremony, TNI held its graduation dinner and gift presentation last evening (May 17).

TK, the TNI Director, shared a brief devotional, the group enjoyed a wonderful meal together, and each graduate received a TNI satchel and book as a gift from the program. Students shared what the Lord has next for them as well as favorite memories from their time in the program.

Those graduating from the TNI program this year with either a major or minor in youth ministry include:
Abby Birkey
Brooke Bowsher
Carrie Bruns
Abigail Dutcher
Ashley Ferko
Jordan Gillette
Joe Heckert
Kat Heckert
Derek Herbert
Kati Hock
Paul Jones
Sarah Kraus
Leah Lawburgh
Megan McGarvey
Billy Starkey
Andrea Whealy

CE National and the National Institute thank the Lord for these young adults and for the burden He has put on their hearts for the next generation. May He use and bless their ministries for His glory. Best wishes, graduates!

Our Second Mom - by Marilyn Orlando

Marilyn Orlando and her husband, Chuck, are long-time members of the Winona Lake Grace Brethren Church in Winona Lake, Ind. Last week, in honor of Mother's Day, we presented a poem Marilyn wrote about her first mom. This week, we present a poem Marilyn wrote about her second mom, Katherine (pictured).

Our Second Mom

Life isn't always easy
As hard things come our way.
Back in nineteen-sixty-two
You had a sad, sad day.

As you were celebrating
The birth of your twins
Your mate began to have some pain,
It wasn't just a twinge.

He went so very suddenly,
No time to say good-bye
It turned a day of happiness
To sorrow, you did cry.

You didn't know it at the time
Another mate had died,
Which left a lonely gentleman,
And he had also cried.

Though time began to heal the pain
The loneliness did stay.
You thought you'd like another mate
So you began to pray.

And how the Lord did answer,
For you met that special man.
That gentleman in Mansfield
Was part of God's plan.

You and Dad were married.
You really loved each other
You won a second family
We won a second mother.

Marilyn Orlando

What Ever Happened to Using YOUTH in Church Ministries?

Ed Lewis strongly believes in the importance of developing a student's gifts for the Lord! "If these gifts are not used or enhanced they may be overlooked," says Ed. Read eight reasons from Ed to start using your youth in church ministries.

  1. Church is not only about adults; it is about training all ages to love and serve God.
  2. Are we stating that we must be so "perfect" that we cannot allow a student to learn to serve in the church?
  3. What can youth do to serve in your church? Is it only manual chores or child-care? Are we equipping today's church and tomorrow's future leaders?
  4. Have you identified the youth you believe need to be challenged to be full-time Christian career workers?
  5. Why are we not using the program of Nurturing Abilities for Christ (NAC) in our local ministries? NAC is a simple program to help students use their talents for the Lord.
  6. Do you know that some student winners at Momentum receive good scholarships to either Grace College, Lancaster Bible College, or Baptist Bible College? Are you taking advantage of this program? Are you also aware of the scholarships available to students who participate in Operation Barnabas or Bible Quizzing?
  7. Are you aware of the ways students can develop their talents for the Lord? Have your young people even had to prepare a Bible lesson? Has the trumpet player EVER played a song that exalts the Lord? Is the artist using his talents for the work of the Lord?
  8. If programs like American Idol and other talent programs are popular among students of today, why can't we promote more opportunities to help students in our churches do more?

Jackie Pinkard has been involved with leading NAC in her region of the country for a number of years. She lives outside of Washington, D.C. and is involved in the Grace Brethren Church in Lanham, Md. Listen to her reasons why NAC is important! Contact Lois at lois@cenational.org for more information.

Join Ed Lewis and Randy Smith on an Unforgettable Adventure.

Our first ministry experience to Israel will be in November of 2012. Pastors, wives, and church leaders are encouraged to go on this trip led by Dr. Randy Smith.

Join with people from CE National for learning Bible geography, doing ministry, and building relationships with people who do not follow Jesus. The goal is to equip ministry participants to bring this experience back home to local communities where they can implement relationship-building and outreach.

This trip will encourage ways to build loving relationships with others. Lodging will be simple so that interacting with people can be fostered and natural.

Is Your Group Having an Identity Crisis? - Steve Lizzio

Steve Lizzio (pictured) serves as the pastor of adult ministries at Hope Church in Mason, Ohio. His passion for midsize groups has led him to develop ABF Resources, a website of resources for those interested in midsize groups.

Steve recently sent this email out to his email list. (Visit abfresources.com to sign up for Steve's email list.)

Building a healthy group identity is extremely important for a midsize group. If a group struggles with identity questions like "Who are we?" or "What are we trying to accomplish?" then the group is obviously struggling with a lack of purpose, cohesiveness, and/or direction. Eventually apathy sets in and the group exists with very little vision or focus. The leadership of the group is crucial in keeping a handle on "the pulse" of the group. It should strategically lead the group in building a healthy "self image" or group identity.

Following are four issues that help contribute to "group identity:"

  1. The group's make up (what draws a group together, life stage, common passion .. i.e. worship)
  2. The group's personality (the personalities that make up the group - amazing how each group is unique!)

Strategically Spending Time - Phil

ONE is about every believer impacting one person for Christ. Each believer should be focusing on developing a relationship with one person, reaching that person, teaching that person, and releasing that person to multiply his/her efforts into the lives of others by making disciples.

Here are more reports from people who have taken this commitment seriously.

Julie: My ONE and I were meeting weekly and discussing basic faith questions. However, when I went off to college, we slowly lost contact. Now she has changed her number and no longer attends church. We're looking for a way to reach her, but as of right now, we have no idea where she is. So currently, my way of impacting her has been to pray for her and pray that God protects her.

Phil: I am strategically spending time with this person and listening to him, so when he is under tension, I can be there to give him eternal hope.

Olivia: To reach out to my ONE, I've been bringing up with her how God has gotten me through so much in my life. She's been noticing it and has mentioned she would like to come to my church.

Hear Ed Lewis talk more about ONE, find resources to help, read testimonies, and let CE National know about your commitment to join the initiative on the ONE website at one.cenational.org.
