2015_may_29_mo_1Students Made Countless Decisions Like These in Following Christ:

“I’m committing to reading and studying the Bible and living a pure and godly life.”
“I’m committing to becoming a follower of Christ and not a fan.”
“I’m committing to following Jesus and wanting to seek & do good for Him in His name.”
“I’m committing to let go of everything that is holding me back in trusting God.”

2015_may_29_mo_2Over 2,000 People Were Deployed Into the City of Chicago

Our students were equipped in sessions and tracks to be ON MISSION as they were on the subway and in downtown Chicago. Groups interacted with many different ethnicity and demographics and were stretched to start conversations and share about how Jesus has worked in their own lives.

Our attendees at Momentum gave BIG last year to help reach people in Africa! We heard from missionary Barb Wooler about the needs in Africa and gave towards food, Bibles, and needs there for the Gospel to be carried to the nations. A portion of the offering also went to help with needs in inner-city Philadelphia where Urban Hope is seeing great life change through Jesus!

A Group From Orrville, Ohio, Visits Urban Hope

Posted in: Featured

urbanhope
A group from Kingsway Christian School in Orrville, Ohio, visited the Urban Hope Training Center from May 16-22.

Every group that visits Urban Hope first goes through orientation. During this time, the staff teach visitors about the community, culture, and ministry of Urban Hope. The orientation time sets the pace of the week to get visitors to start focusing on living ON MISSION.

As a ministry training center, Urban Hope seeks to equip believers with the tools they need to live ON MSSION not only at Urban Hope, but especially as they go back home. The evangelism philosophy at Urban Hope is FISH: F: Friendly, I: Initiate, S: Story/Serve, H: Hope.

To encourage living ON MISSION, leaders help the visiting teams to begin thinking of ways they can reach their community, have people from the Urban Hope community share their testimonies, and help them to process all the different mission opportunities they experience while at Urban Hope.
Throughout the time a visiting team is at Urban Hope, the leaders emphasize the importance of “taking it home” and applying what they learned to their own context and community.

During the time that Kingsway was at Urban Hope, the group was able to apply the FISH method of evangelism on prayer walks, near local schools, in Chinatown, at the Reading Terminal Market, and around the community. The group also went to Love Park to do homeless ministry. There they had great conversations with people centered around stories of how God was working in lives.

The group also had the opportunity to learn about the city of Philadelphia and community around Urban Hope, about what it means to live ON MISSION, about how to share their faith, and about how to take home the skills they learned and apply them in their own homes, schools, and communities.

Kingsway Christian School was led by teacher Andy Gerber. Two other teachers also helped to lead the trip. In total, the group was comprised of 14 individuals; 3 adults and 11 teens. All the teens are finishing up their junior year of high school.

One testimony from Kingsway Christian School is from Charity Hargrave: “[In my time at Urban Hope,] it has helped me with communication with others from different cultures.”

Many shared of their desire to do outreach back in Orrville, Ohio, and their desire to live ON MISSION!

Although it is practiced in a variety of forms, traditions, and across most denominations, one thing is certain—the joy of baptism can bring a church community together in powerful ways. It is a major step in telling others of your commitment to following Jesus.

We praise the Lord for faithful board members who serve this Church Effectiveness ministry. Just this past weekend, the spring board meetings were held in San Francisco, California. The meetings were a wonderful time of reporting what God is doing through CE National ministries, approving future plans, and visiting various ministry sites. The board was blessed by Pastor Knute Larson sharing devotionals as well as the role of the board. The board saw the sites” but also visited Youth With a Mission, The International House, and City Impact to learn of new ideas and principles.

God is at work in the city of San Fransisco and this group of leaders was blessed by the opportunity to rub shoulders with fellow workers, as well as giving good counsel for future CE National ministries.

The National Institute Students Study at Urban Hope

Twenty-five Grace College students, who are in either The National Institute or the new studies in urban ministries major, just returned from a week in Philadelphia at the Urban Hope Training Center. Rather than study cross cultural youth ministry in Winona Lake, Indiana, they attend this one-week module set in the fifth largest city in the United States. Jason Holt organized the week-long opportunity speaking, teaching and bringing in current practitioners in student ministry in various ethnic settings all over the city. Not only did the students participate in classroom time, but the students did homeless ministry, visited various ethnic churches, and served in student and children’s ministry. The guys helped carry windows to the second and third floors of the new Students in Urban Ministries building. Many hands do make light work!

Nick, one of the students on the trip, shared through Facebook the following message:

“Finally back home after a week in Philadelphia for a class/GO encounter trip. I am happy to be back after a week of being away, but I am sad in the fact that I had to leave Philly. I am so blessed to have gotten the chance to go. I have to say that my heart is heavy with what is going on in Philadelphia. Please pray that the people there will be shown the love of God!”

Students shared what God did in their lives this week. Some are changing majors to include an urban ministry major and others are telling the Lord they are willing to go wherever he tells them to go. How could we not consider this to be an incredible week when there is awesome life change!!
