What is Urban Hope?
Urban Hope, located in the West Kensington section of North Philadelphia, exists to reach the urban family through youth and children (Urban Hope Community Church) and to train believers in cross-cultural urban ministry (Urban Hope Training Center).
An experience with Urban Hope provides participants with the ability to jump into cross cultural ministry within a guided context. Participants who have teamed up with Urban Hope for an outreach weekend or short term missions trip have seen impact not only in Philadelphia, but within their group’s lives. All participants are encouraged and equipped to become agents of changed lives and to live ON MISSION.
The Urban Hope Training Center is only a thirty minute drive from the Philadelphia airport, and located within 10 blocks of the SEPTA Market-Frankford line—a stay at Urban Hope reveals both the pressures of urban life mixed with the joy of a tight knit community life. There are many ways for individuals and groups to be a part of the ministry of Urban Hope.
How Do I get involved?
Visit Us: Come and spend a day, weekend, or week with us! Serve alongside Urban Hope’s Kingdom Kids Program, Ministry in Ethnic communities, Homeless Ministry Downtown, “On Mission” Prayer walks, and a variety of special opportunities which occur year round.
Work Projects: Has God given you the gift and ability to do one or more of the following: construction, plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, facility maintenance, painting, or other skills? There is an opportunity to use those gifts at Urban Hope. A work team may consist of one person or a group of people.
Summer Internships: Available from the last week of May through the first week of August, interns help to facilitate and oversee the everyday aspects of Urban Hope. Who Can Apply? Those who have been out of high school for at least one year are able to apply for our summer internships.
One Year Internship: Come spend a year in Philadelphia as an intern and be stretched in your ministry skills especially relating to sharing your faith and discipling new believers! Our one year internship is designed for people who find jobs in the Philadelphia area and who commit to living here in our community for that year to discover whether God has called them to inner-city ministry and to see if it is a good fit for them. We like to start our one year internships in September each year and many people move in sometime during August, but this timing can be flexible. Anyone who has finished college or vocational training and is able to secure employment in the Philadelphia area can apply.
How does Urban Hope reach the community?
Whether Kingdom Kids, or a meal shared at a Family Group—the emphasis is on loving people and sharing life with them. The Gospel is always presented as a reason for our Hope. We share Jesus through a variety of programs:
Kingdom Kids is a high energy, contemporary visitation and outreach program for children ages 5-12, with the purpose to build relationships with the children and families of Kensington. Occurring on Sunday afternoon during the school year and weekly in several local parks during the summer, Kingdom Kids workers seek to visit every child that comes to Kingdom Kids on a weekly basis in order to establish relationships with their family members.
Kingdom Kids Day Camp
During the summer, Kingdom Kids extends its ministry into a Sports and Arts Day Camp. Through the help of visiting ministry participants, children are trained in various sports activities (basketball, soccer, football, etc.) and various art activities (drawing, crafts, dance, etc.). The key element of the day camp is a daily Bible time where children are taught about God’s Word. The day camp is a great opportunity for us to build stronger relationships with the children and to help them understand more about God’s Word.
ROCK is a program for youth that happens every Friday night in our Community Center. The purpose of ROCK is to motivate students to follow Christ and provide a safe environment for them to hang out on a Friday night. Those who attend are challenged by God’s Word in the issues they are facing on a daily basis. The Community Center provides a safe place for youth to play basketball, dodge ball, air hockey, video games, board games, etc.
This community based service includes a prayer request time, and a time where everyone is encouraged by the Word of God and challenged to live it out through faith in their daily lives. Services occur Sundays.
Tuesday nights are a time to grow in our relationship with Jesus and fellowship with others that desire to follow Jesus together during our small group Bible study. Beginning with a fellowship meal, and including worship, a teaching on witnessing, a discussion on the Word and accountability; family groups meet in same age and gender small groups, to best develop each person who comes.
